On November 12th and 13th, 53 public safety representatives from throughout Arizona conducted 16 hours of intense active violence response training. The purpose of the Public Safety Integration Operations Course is to deconstruct the nature of these evolving threats as well as offer awareness-level integrated point-of-wound care instruction specifically focused on dynamic active violence, all-hazards and/or explosive threats. Day 2’s activities were the culmination of several hours of didactic, practical skills and real-world scenarios’ based training, focusing on the practical application of the 3 phases of Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) and ensuring that all participants had the knowledge, skills and abilities to implement these lifesaving skills under stressful conditions. Active violence events have resulted in numerous civilian casualties and captured the attention of the nation. These horrific and calculated acts have dramatically impacted countless individuals and communities by instilling fear that such events can unpredictably occur in urban, suburban, rural and metropolitan areas. Despite evolving threats, many public safety organizations throughout the country have yet to develop response paradigms to meet these challenges.

This course is specifically targeted for law enforcement and fire / EMS organizations who want to proactively develop integrated response strategies to mitigate the impact a violent mass casualty incident can have on their community. This workshop is recognized by both the Arizona Center for Fire Service Excellence (AzCFSE) and Arizona Peace Officers Standards and Training (AZPOST) Committees.

In the aftermath of the shooting at Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, there are several ways to help or contribute to the victims and support efforts: 1. “We all woke up today to the images and stories from the horrific shooting in Thousand Oaks last night,” reads a statement on the Ventura County Community Foundation Facebook page, which has coordinated with the city of Thousand Oaks and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to create a fund through which people can donate to support the “victims, families and organizations providing first and second line support.” Donations can be made to the fund at vccf.org/donate/make-a-donation. Also, on their Facebook page. 2. Crowdfunding website GoFundMe announced a verified fundraising campaign has been started for the victims of the shooting. The funds raised will be collected by the Rotary Club of Westlake Village, a registered nonprofit organization of which Borderline Bar & Grill owner Brian Hynes is a member. 3. A second verified GoFundMe campaign has been started specifically for the family of slain Ventura County sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Helus. The town of Oro Valley now has 12 more trained and certified immediate responders among their ranks! On Saturday, November 10th, educators from Pusch Ridge Christian Academy completed the necessary educational requirements to obtain American College of Surgeon’s Bleeding Control Certification. Civilians need basic training in Bleeding Control principles so they can provide immediate, frontline aid until first responders can take over care of an injured person. Due to many situations, there may be a delay between the time of injury and the time a first responder is on the scene. Without civilian intervention in these circumstances, preventable deaths may occur. Although no single set of skills or response can fit all injury, trauma, or active violence situations, making sure everyone knows his or her options and can react decisively will save valuable time and lives. As members of our extended community family, these citizens now have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to help save a life!

On Saturday, October 27, a gunman entered the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA, killing 11 people and wounding six others. The shooting is the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in United States history. Here are six concrete ways you can help: 1. Give money directly to the synagogue and survivors: The money raised from the verified GoFundMe fundraiser will go to the survivors and families of the victims, and it will also help with repairing damages to the building. Funds will be sent directly to the Tree of Life Congregation. You can also donate money through Tree of Life's website, and they accept donations through phone, check, or PayPal. Or you can donate 0.5% of your Amazon purchases to the synagogue when you set your charity of choice to the Tree of Life Congregation. 2. Donate to the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society: The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, or HIAS, is an organization that was initially started to help Jewish refugees, but now helps all refugees worldwide. As The Cut reports, the shooter named HIAS in his anti-Semitic social media posts, and according to Newsweek, he believed the organization was aiding a caravan of Central American migrants heading to the U.S. border. HIAS released a statement on the Tree of Life shooting, and they're accepting financial donations. They also recommend other ways you can get involved, from organizing a rally to talking to candidates running in the midterm elections. 3. Support causes championed by the victims: Achieva is an organization that supports people with disabilities, and two of the victims of the shooting, brothers Cecil and David Rosenthal, received services from Achieva. In lieu of flowers, the brothers asked for donations to Tree of Life and/or Achieva. 4. Contribute to organizations supporting the community: The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh's fundraiser will help with medical bills, psychological services, and additional security throughout the community. The LaunchGood campaign, a fundraiser set up by two Muslim organizations, CelebrateMercy and MPower Change, is raising funds to help with funeral expenses and medical bills for the victims. 5. Go to a vigil: The Anti-Defamation League has partnered with local organizations to set up gatherings and vigils in remembrance of the victims. You can see a full list on their website. 6. Give blood: As local news site WPXI reports, a number of organizations have set up blood drives for victims of the shooting. The non-profit blood center Vitalant is asking for blood donations, and you can set up an appointment online. The American Red Cross is also holding a drive on Friday, November 2 and Friday, November 30 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, and appointments are required. Pima County residents now have 40 more trained and certified immediate responders among their ranks! On Monday, October 22nd, these exceptional young men and women from Pima Community College’s Phlebotomy Program, completed the necessary educational requirements to obtain American College of Surgeon’s Bleeding Control Certification.
