Pima County now has 25 more trained and certified immediate responders among their ranks! On Thursday, October 18th, congregation members from Christ Community Church completed the necessary educational requirements to obtain American College of Surgeon’s Bleeding Control Certification. Civilians need basic training in Bleeding Control principles so they can provide immediate, frontline aid until first responders can take over care of an injured person. Due to many situations, there may be a delay between the time of injury and the time a first responder is on the scene. Without civilian intervention in these circumstances, preventable deaths may occur. Although no single set of skills or response can fit all injury, trauma, or active violence situations, making sure everyone knows his or her options and can react decisively will save valuable time and lives. As members of our extended community family, these citizens now have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to help save a life!

ICSAVE is proud to be a part of this year’s Tucson Meet Yourself (TMY) Festival. The festival has been held each year in Downtown Tucson, Arizona since 1974. TMY was founded by University of Arizona folklorist and anthropologist Dr. James “Big Jim” Griffith, who in 2011 was honored by the National Endowment for the Arts with a prestigious recognition as a “National Heritage” treasure. TMY is the signature annual event of the Southwest Folklife Alliance (SFA). SFA produces a number of other programs that help support, honor and promote the traditional arts and heritage practices of the region and that complement the festival year-round. TMY has had a long history of partnership and shared goals with the University of Arizona. To learn more about that history go here. TMY is building a community that respects traditions, culture, diversity and honors the land and environment (“sense of place”) unique to the desert borderlands. We have several ongoing partnerships with other organizations in our region dedicated to fostering compassion, integrity, and stewardship of the land and our Southwestern cultural ways. Hurricane Michael Relief Efforts

Hurricane Michael became the most powerful storm to ever make landfall on the Florida Panhandle coast on October 10, bringing surging floodwaters and winds that reached 155 miles per hour. The powerful storm surprised many in the region, growing from a tropical storm to a destructive Category 4 Hurricane in just 40 hours. As a result, more than 375,000 people up and down the Gulf Coast were urged to evacuate quickly, many of whom stayed behind to ride out the potentially deadly storm. Several members of ICSAVE are presently deployed assisting with disaster relief efforts and, given the magnitude of these events, recognize the need is greater than ever before. For those not directly affected by this tragedy, we encourage you to give to the relief effort. The Red Cross depends on financial donations to provide disaster relief. You can help people affected by Hurricane Michael by visiting redcross.org, calling 1- 800-RED CROSS or texting the word MICHAEL to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Donors can designate their donation to Hurricane Michael relief efforts by choosing that option when donating on redcross.org or on 1-800-RED CROSS. The best way to ensure your donation will go to a specific disaster is to write the specific event name in the memo line of a check. We also recommend completing and mailing the donation form on redcross.org with your check. To the brave men, women and children affected by this calamity, you are in our thoughts and prayers. October 9th- 10th, the Phoenix Fire Department hosted their second  National Association of Emergency Medical Technician (NAEMT) Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) Course. Sponsored by Integrated Community Solutions to Active Violence Events (ICSAVE), the course brought together over 30 active public safety professionals from the Phoenix Fire and Police Departments. The 16-hour course covered topics designed to decrease preventable death in the tactical situation. Topics included: Hemorrhage control; surgical airway control and needle decompression; strategies for treating wounded responders in threatening environments; caring for pediatric patients; and techniques for dragging and carrying victims to safety. Developed by NAEMT’s Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) Committee, the TECC program is based on the guidelines from the Committee on Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (Co-TECC) and the Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) program. TECC uses lessons learned from our military and applies them to the civilian world of tactical medicine. Thank you to all that attended!

Since 1999, there have been over 1850 deadly force incidents take place throughout our faith-based communities.

ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) is a set of proactive, options-based strategies, that increase your chances of survival during a violent intruder or Active Shooter event.

This course is designed to teach school, church, hospital and workplace administrators and employees skills and strategies that bridge the gap between the time a violent event begins and law enforcement arrives.
